Chamika Karunaratne receives one year suspended ban

Sri Lankan cricketer, Chamika Karunaratne has been handed 1 year of a suspended ban by Sri Lanka Cricket over an alleged contract breach.

Sri Lanka Cricket’s executive committee held a meeting on Wednesday. Post the meeting, the board announced that Chamika Karunaratne has been handed a one-year suspension ban. Karunaratne has allegedly violated the player’s agreement during his stay in Australia for the T20 World Cup. However, they refused to reveal the exact details of what went wrong.

The three-member panel also revealed that the player in question has accepted all charges leveled against him. He also pleaded guilty to the same. Chamika Karunaratne will be barred from playing all forms of cricket for a year. He will also have to pay a fine of $5000.

Sri Lanka Cricket has issued a statement in which it has announced its decision. They said that the charges against the all-rounder were serious. They also advised taking strict action to avoid any further violations.

Here’s their full statement,

“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to inform that the disciplinary inquiry carried out by the three-member inquiry panel into the alleged violations by nationally contracted playerChamika Karunaratne, for breaching several clauses in the Player Agreement during the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup held in Australia. Mr. Karunaratne had pledged guilty for all charges leveled against him,”

“Considering the seriousness of the violations committed by Mr. Karunaratne, the Inquiry Panel by its report has recommended to the Executive Committee of the SLC to strongly warn the player to refrain from further violations. And to impose a punishment that will not have an impact on his cricketing career,”

“Subsequent to the said findings and recommendations of the panel the Executive Committee of SLC has handed a 1-year ban from taking part in all forms of Cricket. And the said ban will be suspended for a period of one year”

“And further to the said suspended sentence a fine of USD 5,000/- was also imposed against Mr. Karunaratne,”
