With nine sixes and four fours, Ruturaj Gaikwad put on a spectacular performance, striking the Gujarat Titans bowlers all around the park. During the mid-match show on Cricbuzz, former India cricketer Virender Sehwag praised the Chennai Super Kings opener, even going as far as to compare him to Virat Kohli.

In the opening match of the 2023 Indian Premier League, Ruturaj Gaikwad displayed a fantastic performance as he scored a brilliant 92 runs off just 50 balls for Chennai Super Kings. Despite losing the game by five wickets, fans and former cricketers alike praised Gaikwad for his impressive innings. Invited to bat by Gujarat Titans, CSK struggled to maintain wickets, but Gaikwad remained strong and played exceptionally well. Although he fell short by just eight runs, Gaikwad came close to Brendon McCullum’s record of scoring a century in the first match of the season.

That no-ball call was debatable: Sehwag

“I often use these words for Virat Kohli, but the way he batted today, it was a real joy to my eyes. That’s the way he batted. No one was able to connect shots (for CSK) in that innings, everyone was getting out early, but he continued with his strong shots. He scored more sixes than fours in his innings! And that’s when he doesn’t have a reputation of scoring sixes,”

Sehwag said.

“Yes, he did hit seven sixes in an over in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy domestic tournament last season. And I don’t think that record will ever be broken. This was a brilliant innings. I think he would be disappointed to not score a century, and the height call on delivery was debatable. But then again, umpire’s decision is paramount,”

Sehwag further added.

Shubman Gill took charge in the run-chase and scored a remarkable 63 runs off 36 balls. Towards the end, Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan played a vital role, contributing 15* and 10* off 3 balls, respectively, and ultimately led the Gujarat Titans to victory.
