T20 World Cup 2024 to undergo major format changes

The next edition of the T20 World Cup to have a different format. It will be hosted in the year 2024 and the format will be completely revamped.

ICC has decided to change the format for the 2024 T20 World Cup. The number of teams will be increased to 20 from the existing number of 16 teams. 4 more teams will get to compete in this mega event. Since the number of teams will be increasing, the format will obviously get under major changes.

The T20 World Cup of 2021 and 2022 had only 2 groups of 8 teams each. 6 teams from each group received direct qualification. And, the final 2 spots were decided by the qualifiers game. Furthermore, the top 2 teams of each group played directly in the semi-finals.

20 teams will be divided into four pools for T20 World Cup 2024

The 20 teams will be divided into 4 pool groups. Each group will have 5 teams each. Further, the top 2 teams from each group will be categorized into two super eight groups. And then the top two of those two groups will proceed to the semi-finals.

12 teams have already received direct qualification for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Among those is the Netherlands, which produced multiple upsets in the tournament. They also changed the semi-final scenario at the last moment by defeating South Africa.

United States of America will also be playing their first tournament, as they are the hosts and will receive a direct qualification. West Indies, the two-time world champions, were eliminated from the last edition in 2022. This time around, they will receive a direct entry as are the co-hosts along with the USA.

The remaining slots will be decided after the regional and main qualifier tournaments. Overall, the revamped structure is likely to make the tournament more interesting and dynamic.
