Former Australian captain, Steve Waugh criticizes Australia’s hectic cricket schedule. He said that people have overdosed on cricket.

Australia has been playing round the clock cricket for a calendar year. Just before the commencement of the T20 World Cup 2022, Australia played 3 back to back bilateral series in three weeks. Post the T20 World Cup, Australia played a 3-match ODI series against England.

However, to everyone’s surprise, the stands were empty for all three games. Not many people turned up for the ODI games. Fans and critics are concerned that the international bilateral series’ allure is being subsidized.

“I think the public has almost overdosed on cricket,” Steve Waugh responds to criticism

Former Australian captain, Steve Waugh is the latest to respond to the criticism. He said that with too much happening in the cricket circuit, people have overdosed on cricket. And hence, the stands were empty for the ODI series.

“There’s a lot of cricket it’s hard to follow, as a spectator its very hard to keep up with it. Three one-dayers against England seemed a bit insignificant really, I mean what were they playing for? There wasn’t a big crowd, I think the public has almost overdosed on cricket,”

Steve Waugh further added that it is difficult for the fans to keep up with the team as they field new squads for every other series. He went on to say that people are finding it hard to find a connection with the team.

“You want the special series to be iconic like the Ashes or against England, it’s hard to follow the Australian side because every time they play they have a different team on the field,”

“For the fans and spectators, it is hard to make a connection because you’re not sure who is playing, I don’t know whether it’s anyone’s fault but you need that consistency in the Australian side. “You want to know who’s in the squad every game, you want to be following it closely and it’s really hard to do that right now,”
