Australia is about to start its summer cricketing season with the Test series at home against the West Indies and South Africa.
While these two series are not much of a concern to the Aussies who pretty well know what the result will be, it is the four-Test series against India that worries them more.
Luckily, two options are in open contention for them in the form of Adam Zampa and Todd Murphy.
For Zampa, the path is clear but for Murphy, it’s certainly not as he has to wait in the wings.
If that happens by any chance, then Murphy can make his debut in Test cricket for Australia.
As the pitches in India offer a lot of turn, the Aussies will most likely bring in Nathan Lyon.
Alongside Lyon, it could be Adam Zampa or Mitchell Swepson as the second spinner, but chances for Zampa are pretty high.
Zampa has not played any red-ball fixtures for Australia since 2019 and this could be his big break.
He is scheduled to play a domestic game against Victoria in the Sheffield Shield early next month.
The Australian cricket board is relying on Zampa’s big game experience and accuracy which will complement Lyon well in India.
Zampa has played 38 first-class matches and has an average of 48.26 with the ball.
Says Zampa,
In terms of Test cricket and having their burning desire, it’s definitely still there.
Adding further he says,
It’s difficult, but I think my best way into that team is doing my best in white ball cricket and you know, if you want someone that can bowl under pressure and has done it at international level then that’s me.
However, Zampa, Agar, or Swepson will not be considered by Australia for their home series this summer as they will rely heavily on Nathan Lyon to deliver the goods.
On the other hand, Todd Murphy could make his Test debut at 22.
He has 19 wickets with an average of 29.68 in five first-class matches.
Australia’s cricketing summer gets underway with the first Test against West Indies at Perth on the 30th of November.
