AUSTRALIA

Australia Cricket Team has a rich heritage. It is the most successful team in the history of cricket. They played their first test match way back in 1877. Pat Cummins is the captain of the Test and One Day International teams. With the retirement of Aaron Finch, Australia is yet to name a T20 captain.

History

In the first Test match played at the MCG in 1877, the Australian cricket team defeated an English side by 45 runs. Charles Bannerman scored the first Test century with a score of 165 before being injured. The lengthy travel time by water between the two nations, which would take several months at the time, limited test cricket, which only took place between Australia and England at the time. With players like Jack Blackham, Billy Murdoch, Fred “The Devil” Spofforth, George Bonnor, Percy McDonnell, George Giffen, and Charles “The Terror” Turner, the squad was quite competitive in its early games despite Australia’s far smaller population. Apart from George Giffen, most cricketers in the period were either from New South Wales or Victoria.

Birth of the Ashes

The 1882 Test match between Australia and England at The Oval was a high point in Australia’s early history. In this game, Fred Spofforth took 7/44 in the game’s fourth innings to keep England from reaching their 85-run mark and win the match. The Sporting Times, a significant London newspaper at the time, published a faux obituary following this game in which England cricket was declared dead and it was revealed that “the corpse was cremated and the ashes were transferred to Australia.” Today marked the beginning of the renowned Ashes series, which pits Australia against England in a string of Test matches to determine who will hold the Ashes. The rivalry is still one of the most intense in sports today.

ICC tournament trophies

Australia have won the most World Cups in the history of Cricket. They have won the ODI World Cup a record five times: 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2015. The team is a two-time Champions Trophy winner in 2006 and 2009. The men in Yellow became the second side after India to win the World Cup on home soil in 2015. Australia had an unbeaten streak of 34 matches in the World Cup which was broken by Pakistan in 2011. The T20 silverware was the only trophy eluding them. But in 2021, Australia won the T20 World Cup by beating New Zealand by 8 wickets.
