AFGHANISTAN

Afghanistan Cricket Team has been playing since the 19th Century. But they came to the limelight in the 21st Century. The Afghanistan Board was formed in 1995. They became an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council ( ICC ) in 2001. Finally, they became a member of the Asian Cricket Council in 2003.

History

Cricket gained popularity among Afghan refugees living in Pakistan in the 1990s. Hence the Afghanistan Cricket Board was established there in 1995. Cricket was initially banned by the Taliban but then it was allowed in 2000. The Afghanistan Cricket Federation was elected as an affiliate member of the ICC the next year.

ICC Tournaments

Afghanistan first featured in an ICC event in the year 2010. They were part of the T20 World Cup in the West Indies. That was the first ICC event for the Asian side and a historical moment for them.
They missed the flight to India during the ODI World Cup in 2011. But they featured in the 2015 ODI World Cup, 2016 T20 World Cup, 2019 ODI World Cup, and all ICC events after that.
