Gujarat Giants’ captain Beth Mooney is out of the remainder of the WPL. Mooney suffered a calf strain while batting during the first match of the tournament against Mumbai Indians on March 4 and had to retire hurt while chasing a target of 207 runs.
Although Mooney returned to training, it is expected to take 4-6 weeks for her to recover fully and complete her rehabilitation. Mooney was bought by Gujarat Giants for INR 2 crore in the player auction.
LAURA WOLVAARDT REPLACES BETH MOONEY
Beth Mooney said:
“I was really looking forward to the maiden WPL season with the Gujarat Giants. But unfortunately, injuries are part and parcel of the sport. I am gutted to be missing the remainder of the season. I, however, will be keeping a close eye on the team’s performance from afar and will be rooting for them every single day. And though I will be away from the field of play for the rest of the season, I am looking forward to coming back stronger, fitter and I will definitely be hungrier next season. For now, I wish the Adani Gujarat Giants squad all the very best for the rest of the WPL season.”
Laura Wolvaardt, the top scorer for South Africa in the T20 World Cup, had gone to Pakistan to play Women’s League exhibition matches for Super Women’s team. However, she will now be part of the Women’s Premier League in Mumbai as a replacement for injured captain Beth Mooney. In the exhibition match, Laura scored an unbeaten 53 in the first game. South African skipper Sune Luus will replace Laura in the exhibition tournament in Pakistan.
