Tom Moody and AB de Villiers have come up with new criteria for the awarding of the Orange Cap.
The 16th season of the Indian Premier League or IPL is in full swing and we have got some very close finishes in just 12 days.
Additionally, there are also some new rules this season such as impact player and reviews for wides and no-balls.
As we all know, the Orange Cap is given to batters who have scored the highest number of runs throughout the season.
Currently, the Orange Cap holder this season was David Warner who has scored 209 runs in just four games with a below-average strike rate of 114.83.
However, he was able to hold it for a very short time because of his poor performance.
Additionally, Warner’s innings have not contributed to any wins for Delhi Capitals so far.
But now, Moody and de Villiers want that the Orange Cap should be awarded based on runs and strike rate.
This will allow even batters of the middle order to win the award.
Says Moody,
The highly sought after Orange Cap should be judged with S/R in mind. I believe runs+S/R combined are more valuable/relevant in #T20. This would also include middle-order batters who are rarely in contention. What that formula is, I’ll leave it to the experts.
Giving support to Moody’s statement, de Villiers says,
Been saying this for ages. No brainer. It’s a comp between 1,2 and possibly/rarely number 3 batters.
Only Michael Hussey and KL Rahul have won the Orange Cap with strike rates of below 130
So far, in the history of the IPL, only two batters have been able to win the Orange Cap with strike rates of below 130.
They are Michael Hussey and KL Rahul who won the award in 2013 and 2020 respectively.
Moreover, in 2013, Chris Gayle was the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament with 708 runs and a strike rate of 156.29.
When it comes to de Villiers, then the South African batter had played at No.3 for a major part of the IPL.
Furthermore, his best IPL season was in 2016 when he scored 687 runs with a strike rate of 168.79 and finished as the third-highest run-scorer in the tournament.
