Afghanistan announces its World Cup 2023 squad. BCCI is the host for the World Cup 2023.

Afghanistan Squad

Naveen-ul-Haq comes to the One Day Internationals squad after two years. The surprising decision is that the senior all-rounder Gulbadin Naib is not in the 15-member squad. Gulbadin Naib is there in the reserve list for the World Cup. Hashmatullah Shahidi leads the team in the World Cup in India. Players like Karim Janat, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Suliman Safi, and Gulbadin Naib who were in the Asia Cup squad are not there in the World Cup squad.

Azmatullah Omarzai comes into the Afghanistan side after missing the Asia Cup due to injury. Naveen-ul-Haq played his last List A game in 2021. However, he is also part of the World Cup squad. Naveen has 14 wickets at an average of 25.42 in the One Day Internationals. Karim Janat, who made his comeback after six years in Asia Cup will not play the World Cup.

Gulbadin Naib who did well with the ball in the last ODI against Pakistan and in the match against Sri Lanka is left out of the squad. The rest of the team is similar to the Asia Cup squad for Afghanistan. Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi Mujeeb ur Rahman, and Noor Ahmad are the spinners.
