Alick Athanaze slams fifty on ODI debut; says he was nervous

West Indies’ young opener, Alick Athanaze has slammed the fastest ODI fifty on debut and has tied it up with India’s Krunal Pandya.

Apparently, West Indies defeated the UAE in the final ODI game of the series and won the series 3-0.

In the final game, the visitors won the game by 4 wickets and 89 balls to spare in the end.

Meanwhile, Athanaze has stated that he was quite nervous on his ODI debut.

However, his nerves started to ease out once he got some runs in the powerplay.

On the other hand, Athanaze’s fifty included three sixes and seven fours and came in just 26 balls.

Says Athanaze,

I was a bit nervous actually, but the nerves went away when I got my first runs and it was good. It was a really good experience [on debut]. [I] haven’t batted much in the night, so it was a first for me actually. But normally that’s how I play in the powerplay- I always look to get the team off to a good start. As a young player, it’s always good to be in a winning team and it gives you the confidence to go out and express yourself.

Athanaze speaks about his conversation with Brian Lara

Furthermore, the young opener also talked about his conversations with the legendary Brian Lara who was the team’s performance mentor.

Additionally, Athanaze ended up scoring 65 from 45 balls that ultimately featured nine fours and three sixes.

The talks with Lara mainly included his improvement of the game and how to judge bowlers’ lengths during the game.

For me, it has been really good. Basically, what we spoke about was judging lengths and trying to get ahead of the bowler. It worked really nicely, and I got myself into some good positions and it was really good to bat out there tonight.

After the completion of this series, West Indies have now gone to Zimbabwe to play the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup Qualifiers.

They will now try to book their spot for the marquee event that is going to be played in India.
