Ravichandran Ashwin broke records of Anil Kumble. The former coach of the Indian team had the precedent of taking the most wickets in the Border-Gaoskar series. The veteran Indian spinner topped him and came to the top among Indians. He is joint top in both countries.
Ash took 6 wickets with 91 runs in Australia’s first innings in the fourth Test at Ahmedabad. With these 6 wickets, Ashwin’s total wickets in the India-Australia Test series is 113. Kumble has 111 wickets, and the veteran off-spinner Ashwin broke that record. He is now the highest wicket-taker in the India-Australia Test series among Indian bowlers. Ash has a chance to increase the number of wickets in Australia’s second innings.
Ashwin now the joint top of both India and Australia, above Kumble
Ashwin came to the joint top of both India and Australia. Australia’s Nathan Lyon had already overtaken Kumble in terms of wickets at Indore, but Ashwin crossed all of them. Lyon also has a total of 113 wickets till Friday in the India-Australia series. As a result, competition has accumulated between the two spinners of the two teams. Who will be on top at the end of the current series will be decided after the Ahmedabad Test.
Despite the steller performance from Ashwin, Steve Smith’s team scored 480 runs in the first innings on the batting support wicket of Narendra Modi Stadium. Usman Khwaja narrowly missed the double hundred. An innings of 180 runs came from his bat. Cameron Green also contributed behind the big run innings for the visitors. Green scored his first Test century. His contribution is 114. In the fifth wicket, these two batsmen added 208 runs.
The Indian team could not take any wicket of Australia in the first two hours on Friday. After the lunch break, it was Ashwin who broke their partnership by dismissing Green. He was then dismissed one by one by Alex Carey, Mitchell Starc, Lyon and Todd Murphy. He dismissed Travis Head on Thursday. Australia’s first innings ended from 378 runs for 4 wickets to 480 runs under Ashwin’s influence.
Ash to perfom hard in the Second Innings to enjoy the spot
Sourav Ganguly also praised Ashwin and his performance. Saurabh wrote on social media,
“Great to see Ashwin bowl so well on a good pitch .. class will always show .. hopefully this will be a good test match .. good opportunity for indian batsman after some tuff wickets to bat on ,in this series.”
Ashwin may have to move from the seat of the highest wicket taker in the Border-Gaoskar series on Saturday. If Lyon get one more wicket against India, they will come out on top again.
