BCCI president Sourav Ganguly gave some great news about commencing a seven-team Women’s IPL next year.

He told that it is plausible that the first edition of this new tournament will start in 2023 and will be the same in grandeur as the men’s IPL. Women were having their own mini-version of the IPL till 2020. BCCI is currently in the final phase of this process.

Women’s cricket in India has received a lot of attention after the 2017 ODI World Cup as well as the 2020 T20 World Cup. BCCI was not in favour to have a women’s IPL due to the fact that people may not watch it in India. But after garnering enough popularity in international tournaments, the women cricketers will finally have an IPL of their own.

In the current scenario, there are around 1100 women players who are playing in domestic tournaments. Around 40 players are playing for India since 2018-19 or awaiting selection into the team.
