BCCI to lose hosting rights for 2023 World Cup over tax issue with ICC?

The years long tussle over taxation between the ICC and BCCI can hamper India’s hosting rights of the upcoming World Cup 2023.

India won the bid to host the ODI World Cup of 2023. The nation last hosted an ICC event in 2016. However, this time around, India will solely host the entire tournament, keeping in mind the resources that the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) has.

However, reports have emerged suggesting that the International Cricket Council (ICC) can take away hosting rights from India over an unresolved taxation issue. India hosted the T20 World Cup in 2016. During the tournament, BCCI handed over interim tax benefits to the ICC. However, the ICC demanded more—roughly 10.3% of the revenue generated by the BCCI. The latter did not agree, and the case is still pending in court.

“Nothing can be done” BCCI informs ICC

The previous taxation issues still remain unsolved. ICC made it very clear that BCCI must find a solution to the unresolved issue before the 2023 World Cup. However, News18 reported from a source that BCCI has already informed the ICC that nothing can be done about the issue from their side. The Indian board even said that they are ready to enter into a legal battle if ICC deducts any amount from BCCI’s revenue from the 2023 World Cup.

“It’s BCCI’s money. If the ICC can’t settle this issue before the World Cup arrives, and end up deducting it from India’s revenue share from the ICC, even this will end up in a legal battle,”

The ball is in ICC’s court to decide whether or not to let India host the 2023 World Cup. They have the power to do that. But given that the BCCI is the largest contributor of funds to the ICC, the move is very unlikely.
