Daryl Harper Criticizes MS Dhoni’s Pause in Play, Questions Sportsmanship

MS Dhoni

Former ICC umpire Daryl Harper has criticized MS Dhoni, the captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), for his alleged disregard for the spirit of the game during the IPL 2023 Qualifier 1 against Gujarat Titans at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The incident occurred during the second innings. When Dhoni engaged in an argument with the umpires before the 16th over.

CSK seamer Matheesha Pathirana had been off the field for a few minutes. So he was required to spend an equal amount of time on the field before resuming bowling. However, Dhoni attempted to bring Pathirana back into the attack after only five minutes. Leading to a heated argument with the on-field umpires. Harper criticized Dhoni for seemingly attempting to delay the game. And accused him of lacking respect for the Spirit of the Game and the umpires involved.

“Of course MS Dhoni wasted time to allow his preferred bowling option to deliver the vital sixteenth over. That’s the only conclusion that I can draw from that disappointing spectacle. The issue for me is the lack of respect shown for the Spirit of cricket. And for the directions of the umpires,”

Harper said.

Disappointing to see the lengths that some people will go to in order to win: Daryl Harper

Expressing his disappointment, the 71-year-old Harper remarked that some individuals may consider themselves above the law or the Spirit of cricket. He expressed his dismay at witnessing the lengths to which people are willing to go in their pursuit of victory. Shifting focus to the match, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secured their place in the IPL 2023 final with a 15-run victory over Gujarat Titans. CSK, batting first, posted a total of 172/7, led by an outstanding innings from Ruturaj Gaikwad (60 off 44). Furthermore in response, GT was dismissed for 157, as CSK’s bowlers collectively contributed to their team’s 10th IPL final appearance.
