Dhoni injured, playing in opening game against GT looks uncertain

MS Dhoni

The opening match of the Indian Premier League is just around the corner. And Chennai Super Kings are facing two unexpected setbacks. Firstly, the tournament confirmed the exclusion of Mukesh Choudhary, and now a niggle in his left knee puts a question mark on the participation of the legendary captain MS Dhoni in the opening match against Gujarat Titans.

Dhoni did not participate in the team’s practice session on Thursday, raising concerns about the severity of his injury. CSK does not have many options for wicketkeeping. This makes it even more interesting to see who will take over behind the wickets if Dhoni is unavailable.

To replace Dhoni, Devon Conway and Ambati Rayudu are the preferred options due to their experience behind the stumps. Rayudu has kept wickets previously for Mumbai Indians, and he could do so again for his current team.

Stokes could captain if MS Dhoni is unavailable

If MS Dhoni is not available for the opening game of the Indian Premier League, Chennai Super Kings will have to look for an alternative captain. However, Ben Stokes, who has been a successful leader for England, is dealing with an injury. Hence, he might not be able to fill the role.

As a result, Ravindra Jadeja, who was the captain of Chennai for most of the season in 2022, could once again be considered to take over the team’s reins. Jadeja has the experience and the ability to lead the team effectively, making him a suitable candidate.

Ahead of the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League, Chennai Super Kings have suffered a major setback as their top bowler from the previous season, Mukesh Choudhary, has been ruled out due to a back injury. As a result, the team has brought in Akash Singh. He was a member of India’s 2020 U-19 World Cup squad, to replace him.
