Dinesh Karthik comments on Shubman Gill and Ajinkya Rahane

India keeper-batter, Dinesh Karthik has analyzed the performances of two players after the culmination of the Test series between West Indies and India.

While India won the series 1-0 after the 2nd game was drawn, there were some performances that didn’t go down well with the visitors.

However, there have been a few positives for India in this Test series, like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal among the runs.

Furthermore, among the wickets for India were Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammad Siraj who were exceptional with the ball.

But, Shubman Gill and vice-captain, Ajinkya Rahane are the two names about which Karthik has made special mention.

Both these players made only 45 and 11 runs in the entire Test series which is quite a concern.

This is also the reason why Karthik has said that Rahane was dropped last year from the Test team.

Says Karthik on Rahane,

Rahane obviously had a very ordinary series. He had really got the WTC final, hence was picked and also named as vice-captain for this series- a few surprises there. He got two opportunities with the bat and on both occasions he was found wanting. The thing with Rahane over a period of time has been that critical word: consistency. That’s why he had lost his place in the side. He would know, he did not make the series count.

Meanwhile, Karthik also had a few words to say for youngster Shubman Gill who was also unimpressive in this series.

Additionally, the keeper-batter says that while Gill has proven himself in ODIs and T20Is, he still has to prove himself capable in Tests.

Shubman Gill, we expect the world from him and just like in T20s, he’s starting out slowly in Tests. If you look at his scores in Test cricket in the recent past, nothing really to take home. He has really made a mark in ODI cricket and T20s. Now for him to make it big in Test cricket, he has the skill, he has the potential what he needs is a little more patience from our side. He does look apart when he plays well.

Moreover, both Gill and Rahane had come into this series after splendid performances in the IPL and WTC respectively.

For Gill, he was the highest run-scorer in this year’s IPL wherein he scored 890 runs with an average of 59.33 in 17 games.

Meanwhile, Rahane had scores of 89 and 46 in the WTC final because of which he was selected.

Furthermore, India’s next Test assignment is in December against South Africa and it is an away series.

Therefore, this is the last opportunity for Rahane to prove himself in Test cricket.
