For Michael Atherton, Ben Stokes is a misfit for England’s T20 World Cup Squad

England are currently playing against Australia in Australia where they have been making some massive records.

This year, England are also looking as the favourites to win the World Cup as they have a very quality batting side with top-class players.

The pitches and conditions in Australia are suitable for a batting-heavy side like England. Last year, they were semi-finalists at the T20 World Cup.

But, they were knocked out by New Zealand who then lost to Australia in the finals.

Even after all these positives, former England batsman Michael Atherton has been pondering over some major issues for the English side.

He feels that Ben Stokes is just a shoo-in for the T20 side but hasn’t played much in the shortest format of the game.

Stokes, who announced his retirement from ODIs after being elected as the Test skipper for the Three Lions, is not a regular member of the Jos Buttler-led T20I side.

Says Atherton,

You could have both Curran and Jordan in the playing XI. Stokes is a shoo-in to this team, but has not played much T20 for quite some time. On the plus side you think that it’s a big tournament and he is a big player.

Adding further, he said,

But if you look at this format, the truth is that he has just not played that much. So maybe Malan at No.3, Brook at No.4 and then you can fit in Curran and Jordan.

Atherton also spoke openly about the batting options that England has in their current T20I setup along with the major issues that England needs to address at the present moment.

There are a few issues surrounding the England team. One of which is injuries, the other issue is at the top of the order. Salt did well in Pakistan and is pushing Alex Hales.

Thus, England have a very big task ahead of themselves in this World Cup.
