Renowned cricket coach, Gurcharan Singh has been conferred with the Padma Shri recently by the Indian government.

Singh has given various contributions to the sport of cricket which is why he has been recognized by the Indian government in this way.

Additionally, Singh has been coach to various players of yesteryears such as Kapil Dev, Ajay Jadeja, Kirti Azad, Murali Kartik, and Maninder Singh to name a few.

But, he feels that a coach should never take credit for saying that a particular player is his/her product.

This thinking should change immediately according to him as it is fundamentally not correct for coaches.

During his playing days, Singh has represented various state teams such as Eastern Punjab State Unions, Patiala, Railways, and Southern Punjab.

According to Singh, whenever a player comes and attends training and simple practice sessions, then coaches immediately start saying that that player is their product.

Singh still claims that Kapil Dev is not his product since he is from Chandigarh and a student of DP Azad.

Moreover, Singh has played 37 First-Class matches after which he turned a professional coach.

Singh says that the thinking of the coaches should change with immediate effect

Gurcharan Singh has stressed the fact that coaches should change their mentality and stop saying that a player is his/her product.

In cricket coaching, a coach needs to keep his fundamentals right. If athletes just attend the training and simple practice sessions, various coaches claim that the athlete is their product. It’s (practice) completely wrong, even Kapil (Dev) has been attending my coaching camps in Bombay, I still don’t claim he is my product, he is from Chandigarh and he is a product of DP Azad.

Adding further, he says,

Every coach has a different technique of coaching, the length of the bat is the same, the width of the bat is the same, but techniques of that coach is what differs.

Gurcharan Singh happy with the current state of cricket in India

Moreover, Singh has expressed his pleasure in the current scenario of cricket in India.

With the introduction of T20s, he feels that this change has come for the good.

Cricket in the country has changed a lot but the change is good.

Singh is only the second cricket coach after Desh Prem Azad to have been conferred with the Padma Shri.
