Irfan Pathan has his say on who will open between Gill and KL Rahul

There is a lot of debate and discussion about who will open with Rohit Sharma in the first test against Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. KL Rahul has been a key member of the squad for the last 2 years. He has scored runs in tough conditions and is also the vice-captain of the Indian team.

But Shubhman Gill has been in amazing touch scoring runs for fun. He scored his maiden T20 hundred in international cricket. The Punjab lad scored a hundred in the last test series against Bangladesh.

Former Indian all rounder Irfan Pathan feels that KL Rahul has scored tough runs for India and is a better opener than Shubhman at the moment. Thus he feels that Shubhman Gill has sealed his spot in white ball cricket but not yet in test matches.

Irfan talks about Shubhman Gill and KL Rahul

“Not in all three formats but in two formats. If you talk about Test matches, you have two openers who have scored runs in difficult conditions, scored runs in England, and won matches for India there.”

“KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma are there, so suddenly because Shubman Gill has scored runs in the T20 format, you cannot ask them to step aside and let him play. You need the stability.”

Pathan applauded Gill for his brilliant hundred in T20I. He also said that if he continues his form, he will definitely open alongside Rohit Sharma in the ODI World Cup.

“I feel he has sealed his spot in T20 cricket after this century. He has done that in ODI cricket in any case. If it continues like this, you will see Shubman Gill alongside Rohit Sharma in the World Cup, there is no doubt about that.”

“Now with the confidence, he will get in T20 cricket, you can assume that his place is almost assured because a transition period is going on there after the T20 World Cup. So you will see him there.”
