THE ASHES

Joe Root values Test cricket discussion with Brian Lara and Sangakkara

Joe Root

Joe Root, the star England batter, shared his experience of playing in the ongoing season of Indian Premier League, saying that it has been a delightful experience to have conversations about Test cricket with legends Brian Lara and Kumar Sangakkara.

Root believes that their insights can be beneficial for him and his team. Especially with the upcoming The Ashes in 2023. The English team is keen to regain the urn and Root thinks that the knowledge he gains from these discussions will be valuable.

He also mentioned that he has been focusing on enhancing his white-ball skills. But he found talking to current players and legends to be invaluable. Despite playing only two matches for Rajasthan Royals in this IPL, Root believes that he is learning a lot by being around experienced players.Root was spotted bowling in the match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on May 11, although he is yet to get an opportunity to bat in the tournament.

Root said:

“It’s been great, I’ve really enjoyed it. It has been a bit different. But I’ve had some really good and interesting conversations with coaches and ex-players out here about Test cricket. I spoke with Brian Lara about batting for a few hours, which was really insightful. At this stage of my career and where I am as a player, I feel like that is where I am going to learn the most by picking people’s brains. And thinking about what I can add to my own game and taking it forward into the next few years.”

Absolutely loving my time here: Joe Root

Mirror quoted Root as saying that spending time around T20 cricket has been amazing to develop his white ball skills. But the opportunity to speak about Test cricket with players such as Lara and Sangakkara has been invaluable. Additionally, Root has confirmed that he will be available for selection for the one-off Test match against Ireland, and he will return on time even if Rajasthan Royals qualify for the finals.
