Michael Vaughan backs KL Rahul over Shubman Gill for WTC final

Former England captain Michael Vaughan opined that KL Rahul should be preferred over Shubman Gill in the upcoming World Test Championship final. Despite Gill’s recent form with the bat, Vaughan stated that Rahul looks more comfortable against moving deliveries and has fewer technical deficiencies. He also advised India to focus on the present rather than their past performance in the Test format.

Vaughan further elaborated on Gill’s hand technique, which moves towards the seaming ball and increases his chances of snicking one to the slip cordon. Overall, Vaughan believes that Rahul is a clear-cut choice for India in the one-off battle against Australia.

Vaughan said:

“The only change that they could make in English conditions is that KL Rahul plays the moving ball better than Shubman Gill. Shubman’s a tremendous young player, but you’ve got to win that one game of cricket. Forget history; it’s about picking the best XI to win the World Test Championship. When it’s straight, Shubman is a dangerous player, but I’ve seen a few little technical deficiencies. When the ball moves, he takes his hand a little bit too much towards the ball.”

Despite pointing out Shubman Gill’s technical deficiencies, Michael Vaughan also emphasized that the team should focus on picking the best team for the one-off World Test Championship final against New Zealand. Vaughan acknowledged that he is not in the selection room, but he suggested that India should prioritize the match at hand rather than thinking about future series.

Although Vaughan thinks that KL Rahul should get the nod over Gill, he admits that it is up to the team management to make the final call. Meanwhile, Rahul has a decent record in England, scoring 614 runs in nine Test matches at an average of 34.11. On the other hand, Gill has only played two matches in England and has scored 57 runs. Despite this, the final decision lies with the Indian team management.
