India’s designated finisher for the T20 World Cup, Dinesh Karthik has come under the radar.
In his two outings with the bat in hand, Karthik has scores of only 1 and 6. He is consuming more balls but not scoring enough runs.
Karthik has not lived up to the title of the designated finisher that he has been given by the Indian side.
And then against South Africa, Karthik should have paired up well with Suryakumar Yadav.
But, once again, Karthik’s flaws came to the fore as he took 15 balls to make just 6 runs and then gave his wicket away to Wayne Parnell.
Pragyan Ojha, India’s former spinner says that Karthik must now be a responsible and trustworthy player for the Indian side.
Dinesh Karthik, who was given a long rope and the trust was put on him, I think he should think about it. He is an experienced player; you want your senior-most players to come and deliver. That’s what David Miller did for his side. We were a few runs short. If you looked at the South African batting, they had a very solid middle-order, they have been getting those runs.
Ojha also commented that the difference in yesterday’s match was the bowling between the two sides.
While South Africa restricted India to 49/5, the Men in Blue on the other hand missed run-outs and a sitter dropped by Kohli cost them the game.
Suryakumar Yadav was the lone batter for India, scoring runs as he helped India post a total of 133. India did keep a tight leash on South Africa in the second innings.
Ojha adds further,
That’s the difference because both the bowling units did their job. When you talk about batting, I felt very strongly that South African batters play to the situation and we did not play to the situation, apart from the middle-order.
