India’s dream of an ICC trophy shattered post-Team India’s exit from the T20 World Cup 2022. England defeated India by 10 wickets in the semi-finals. Skipper Rohit Sharma and co. received heavy criticism for their defensive approach and lack of intent.

Soon after the elimination, news surfaced that BCCI was planning to execute a smooth transition in the shorter format. Rumor has it that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be phased out of the T20s. Moreover, Hardik Pandya is likely to groomed for the leadership role.

“BCCI never asks anyone to retire,” BCCI source

A BCCI source spoke to PTI and said that BCCI has never asked anyone to retire. It is completely left to a player’s personal will. Moreover, the source confirmed that the senior players will not be seen playing T20s and will focus on preparations for the ODI World Cup 2023.

“The BCCI never asks anyone to retire. It is an individual decision. But yes, with just a handful of T20Is scheduled in 2023, most of the seniors will concentrate on ODIs and Test matches in that cycle,”

“You don’t need to announce retirement if you don’t want to. You will not see most of the seniors playing T20 next year”

The BCCI is likely to call a meeting with coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli to discuss the next steps. The ODI World Cup 2023 is less than a year away. Hence, BCCI and Indian team management want to set a plan of action and work on it.

However, before the start of the first ODI against Bangladesh, Rohit Sharma clarified that the team is not thinking about the ODI World Cup as of now. He and the coach have a plan. But they will work on it once the World Cup approaches.
