Rohit Sharma away from captains’ meet before IPL opener due to illness

Mahela Jayawardene - Rohit Sharma - Mumbai Indians

As per reports, Rohit Sharma, the skipper of Mumbai Indians, was unable to attend the pre-IPL captains’ meet and photo shoot held on March 30, due to his ill health. This led to his absence from the pictures posted on the Indian Premier League’s official Twitter account. At the Narendra Modi Stadium, representatives from all other nine teams were present, represented by their respective captains. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was also in attendance, standing in for Sunrisers Hyderabad’s captain Aiden Markram, who is currently on national duty in South Africa.

There are no reports of Rohit missing the 1st game for MI

It remains unclear whether Mumbai Indians’ skipper Rohit Sharma will play in the season opener on April 2. The game is against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Although, there have been no official confirmations of his absence. However, reports suggested that he might be rested for a few games due to workload management. If Rohit is unavailable, 32-year-old Suryakumar Yadav is expected to lead the team.

Rohit’s unavailability could be a significant blow to Mumbai Indians, who had a poor performance in the 2022 season. He has been the captain of the franchise for over a decade now. He is one of the best batters in the league with 5879 runs at an average of 30.30, including 40 half-centuries and a century.

Aside from his batting prowess, Rohit has been a successful leader, leading Mumbai Indians to become the most successful team in the tournament’s history in terms of trophies won. Hence, without Rohit’s leadership, an inexperienced batting line-up may struggle.

Moreover, the team is already missing one of its strike bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah. If Rohit is unable to play, it could further weaken the team’s chances of success. Even though, MI’s bowling attack looks slightly more balanced this season.
