THE ASHES

Root to be England’s Anchor and Glue this Summer: Vaughan

Joe Root

Michael Vaughan lauds Joe Root for his brilliant century on the first day of the Ashes 2023 at Edgbaston. Root’s unbeaten 118 off 152 deliveries, including seven boundaries and four sixes, impressed Vaughan. The former England captain noted that Root’s batting makes England look effortless on the field, highlighting his six against Scott Boland. Vaughan further praised Root for playing an exciting brand of cricket, supported by his team.

“When he plays, he makes it look so easy. To scoop Scott Boland at 95 mph for a six, he makes it look so easy. That’s probably one of the most ridiculous shots, that if we try to play would just balloon in the air. He’s playing a brand of cricket which is exciting and the team is allowing him to do that,”

Vaughan said.

What I liked about his innings what that he played the Joe Root way: Vaughan

Vaughan expressed his admiration for Root’s innings, appreciating his unique style of play. The former captain praised Root’s excellent running between the wickets with Jonny Bairstow. Vaughan emphasized that Root’s consistency will be crucial in anchoring and strengthening England’s cricket team during the summer.

“What I liked about his innings what that he played the Joe Root way. He’s always busy, he’s always hard to set fields for. The running between the wickets with Bairstow was outstanding. If he can be consistent, which he will be at number four, Joe Root will play the anchor role and be that glue for England in the summer,”

Vaughan further added.

In Australia’s innings, opener Usman Khawaja smashed a century, scoring 141 runs off 321 balls, before their team was dismissed for 386 by England. Alongside Khawaja, Travis Head and wicket-keeper Alex Carey also made valuable contributions, scoring 50 and 66 runs respectively, for the side led by Pat Cummins.
