Shane Watson wants KL Rahul to perform, praises Rohit Sharma

In the just-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy today, India beat Australia 2-1 and retained the prestigious title under skipper Rohit Sharma.

However, KL Rahul hasn’t had a good enough BGT this time around.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has put Rahul’s chances in grave danger as he scored a fabulous ton in the 4th Test.

On the other hand, the selectors weren’t too happy with Rahul’s performances and thus removed him from the post of vice-captain.

Therefore, it will not be pretty difficult for Rahul to get an opener’s slot in India’s red-ball team.

But, former Australia allrounder, Shane Watson has pointed out another flaw of Rahul which is his over-concern for a spot.

Watto feels that KL Rahul has a lot of potential and that he is still a good Test match player.

Furthermore, he has also stated that Gill’s exuberance and confidence are his recipe for success.

Says Watto,

The biggest thing about KL Rahul would be allowing himself the freedom just to take the game on. What Shubman Gill has done is come in and…yes he is playing on a very nice batting track as well compared to the other Test matches. But again, Gill is full of confidence and has got that real young exuberance with his aggression in taking on the game.

Adding further, he says,

Unfortunately for Rahul, because he is concerned about his spot, he just doesn’t have that full freedom and fluency to make use of the skill that he has got. I am a huge fan of Rahul. I love the way he plays. Beautiful to watch. The biggest thing is that let that pressure go and take the ball as it comes because he has got immense skill and can take on and take down and defend the best balls in the world in all conditions. So that will be a big learning for him.

Watson praises Rohit Sharma for displaying great captaincy skills

Meanwhile, skipper Rohit Sharma has been a great Test captain for India leading them to some great victories.

Watson is all praises for the Indian skipper and has vouched that he should remain so in the longest format.

Additionally, he has stated that with head coach, Rahul Dravid by his side, Rohit doesn’t need to be worried.

Rohit is a very experienced captain. Yes as a Test captain it is his first real big series, but he is an experienced leader and has got some great people around him like Rahul Dravid, who is a very special person himself. So any direction or guidance that he needs will come from him. The beauty of Rohit taking over India captaincy is the experience he has got and the success he has had having led Mumbai Indians, albeit in the shorter format.
