India’s young sensation, Shivam Mavi is highly elated after his dream run for India against Sri Lanka yesterday.
Mavi picked up four wickets and gave away only 22 runs in the first T20I at Wankhede Stadium.
Mavi’s call-up to the national side came after his tremendous performance in the 2022 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy where he scalped 10 wickets for Uttar Pradesh.
But, his dream to play for India has been since his U19 days in 2018.
Already many India greats like Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman have vouched for Mavi as the next big thing for the country.
However, it has taken six long years for Mavi to finally come to this stage.
In the IPL, Kolkata Knight Riders decided to purchase Mavi and picked him up for INR 3 crores in 2018.
On the other hand, injuries continued to plague the 24-year-old and he also had many inconsistencies as a player.
Says Mavi,
Was waiting for six years after playing U19. Had to work hard in those six years- got injured as well. For a while it looked like my dream will remain a dream. But I kept at it. Having played in the IPL, the nervousness is a little less. My idea in the Powerplay is to attack and get them out. Favourite dismissal was the first one, getting him bowled.
Mavi shines on debut for India in the first T20I
During the match, when India needed something special to win the game against the Lankan Lions, Mavi did exactly that and gave India four crucial wickets.
Moreover, when Sri Lanka was almost on the cusp of victory, Mavi dismissed the dangerous-looking Wanindu Hasaranga which totally shifted the game in India’s favor.
Eventually, India won the game by 2 runs and has now taken the lead of 1-0 in the series.
