Shubman Gill, at the age of 23, has emerged as one of the brightest young talents in international cricket, thanks to his remarkable performance in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. Gill, who was already in superb form while playing for India and representing Gujarat Titans in the tournament, showcased his brilliance throughout the season, establishing himself as one of the best batters in the world.
With three centuries and a total of 890 runs in 17 matches, Gill claimed the prestigious orange cap as the highest run-scorer in the IPL. His exceptional achievements also secured him the second-highest individual run-getter record in the history of the tournament. These remarkable accomplishments have garnered well-deserved praise from former India captain Kapil Dev.
Dev believes that Gill is following the path of many legendary players. But acknowledges that the young talent still requires another year to solidify his position as a truly exceptional player. Gill’s consistent performances have undoubtedly showcased his immense potential and promise, establishing him as a force to be reckoned with in the cricketing world.
Shubman has signs of greatness: Kapil
“Sunil Gavaskar came, Sachin Tendulkar came, then Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag, and Virat Kohli came, and now, with the kind of batting he is showing. It appears that Shubman Gill is following their footsteps. But I will like to give him another season (before making big claims). He definitely has the talent and ability, but he needs more maturity,”
Kapil said.
“If he plays another season like this, there is no doubt that he, too, could be included in the list of great players. But I would not like to take him to that league currently. Maybe he needs to give one more year. It’s too early (to say),”
he further added.
Gill’s outstanding displays propelled Gujarat Titans to their second consecutive IPL final. Unfortunately, their championship dreams were shattered by Chennai Super Kings. CSK clinched their fifth IPL title with a convincing five-wicket victory in the final. Despite Gill’s heroics, the Titans fell short in their quest for ultimate glory against a formidable Chennai team.
