Simon Doull hails Conway’s exceptional performance as CSK’s opener

Devon Conway - Chennai Super Kings - CSK

Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull was highly impressed by Conway’s sensational knock, expressing his admiration for the 31-year-old. Doull went on to commend Conway as a genuinely talented cricketer, emphasizing his remarkable performances throughout the IPL 2023 season.

On Saturday, May 20, the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi hosted a thrilling clash between Delhi Capitals, led by David Warner, and the four-time champions Chennai Super Kings in the 67th game of the ongoing IPL.

Chennai Super Kings won the toss and chose to bat first, setting the stage for an impressive performance. Opening batsmen Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad delivered exceptional innings, with Gaikwad scoring 79 runs and Conway displaying his brilliance with 87 runs off 52 deliveries.

Their outstanding partnership helped Chennai Super Kings post a formidable total of 223 runs on the scoreboard, leading them to a resounding victory with a massive margin of 77 runs. This victory secured Chennai Super Kings’ spot in the playoffs, making them the second team to achieve this feat in IPL 2023.

It’s been a phenomenal run from Conway: Simon Doull

“Conway is averaging almost 50 in the IPL while striking at 140 in just 21 games. Those are incredible numbers. It’s been a phenomenal run for Conway. He does it with classical cricket shots. He’s just a genuinely good cricketer. He plays spin well and plays the quicks very well,”

Simon said.

“Chennai have always had players like that. Be it Shane Watson or Michael Hussey, you look at them and say good players, but they’re not T20 superstars, especially Hussey. Faf du Plessis when he was there, you don’t think brute force. But Chennai have always had one, and Conway is another one of those,”

he further added.

After his impressive innings against Delhi Capitals, Conway has now secured the third spot in the IPL 2023 Orange Cap race. He has scored 585 runs in 14 matches. As a crucial player for Chennai, his contributions will be relied upon in Qualifier 1 of the tournament.
