Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced their squad for the ODI series against Afghanistan just a day before the series starts.

Sri Lanka announced a 16-member squad for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan on Thursday, 24th November 2022. The series is all set to begin on Friday, 25th November 2022. The Lankan cricket committee announced the squad just a day before the series start.

Meanwhile, Bhanuka Rajapaksa has requested a release from the tour. He was initially named in the final 16-member squad. But just after the announcement, he asked the Sri Lanka committee to release him from the team as he wanted to take a break from the ODI format. The selection committee accepted the batter’s request and later officially removed his name from the final squad.

Here’s the final 16-member Sri Lanka squad for the ODI series against Afghanistan

Dasun Shanaka (captain), Pathum Nissanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Mendis, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, Dananjaya Lakshan, Kasun Rajitha, Maheesh Theekshana, Pramod Madushan, Asitha Fernando, Ashen Bandara, Lahiru Kumara

Dasun Shanaka will retain his captaincy duties. Moreover, Dananjaya Lakshan will be making a comeback after a whole year of being out of the national team. Also, the players who got injured during the T20 World Cup will be making a comeback. Hasaranga will be leading the spin attack as usual along with Theekshana.

Moreover, Chamika Karunaratne will miss the series as he received a one-year ban from the Sri Lanka Cricket committee. Chamika allegedly violated the player’s contract during his stay at the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. He accepted all the charges leveled against him. He will be barred from playing any form of cricket for a year and must pay a $5000 fine.

Furthermore, the sports ministry has reportedly yet to approve the squad. The department has not yet approved the announced squad, and the game is set to take place tomorrow.
