Yuvraj Singh in support of Shubman Gill as a contender for the ODI World Cup

Shubman Gill

Former India cricketer and great, Yuvraj Singh feels that young India opener Shubman Gill is a fit candidate for the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Singh, who has been a part of India’s 2007 and 2011 ICC victories, is very appreciative of Gill.

Recently, Gill played in the ODI series against New Zealand where he had scores of 50 and 45* in the first two ODIs.

However, he is not a part of the ongoing ODI series against Bangladesh.

In 12 matches, Gill has scored 638 runs at an average of 70.88 that includes a century and four half-centuries.

Gill has also been able to form a great partnership with Shikhar Dhawan at the top of the order.

Says Yuvraj,

I think Shubman is doing very well and is performing consistently. I believe he is a strong contender to open for India in the 2023 World Cup.

During the Covid lockdown in 2020, Gill stayed with Yuvraj at the latter’s place and along with Abhishek Sharma put in the hard yards under Yuvraj’s mentorship.

Yuvraj retired from all forms of international cricket way back in 2019 and is now mentoring some young Punjab players.

Adding further, Yuvraj says,

Shubman is very hardworking and is doing all the right things. I believe he is destined for greatness in the next 10 years.

When asked about taking up a position at the BCCI, Yuvraj refused to quote anything.

However, he has dreams of becoming a sports/cricket administrator for the country.

Says Yuvraj,

I can’t say what will happen in the future but if I can help in the growth of sports in the country, I wouldn’t mind. But it is not just cricket but I will like to help in the growth of sports in this country.
