INTERNATIONAL CRICKET

Gill or Rahul? Who will open with Rohit in 3rd Test?

Shubman Gill

The press box at Indore’s Holkar Stadium came to life around 2.30 p.m. on Monday afternoon. Shubman Gill and KL Rahul were batting side by side at the practice pitches on the outfield’s edge. The debate over the composition of India’s XI has died down to almost non-existence. Almost, because there’s still the issue of Gill vs Rahul, Rahul vs Gill.

CRITICS ARE CALLING FOR GILL

Gill batted the longest of any Indian player on Monday, two days before the third Test, and Rahul batted nearly as long. In India, net sessions rarely produce simple answers to difficult questions. Gill was halfway through a lengthy stint against India’s left-arm throwdown specialist. Anyone watching would have assumed Gill was preparing to face Starc, who will rejoin Australia’s XI in two days. Rahul, on the other hand, was seen simultaneously practicing slip catches.

KL Rahul is under a lot of scrutinies due to his poor form. Many critics are saying that ‘KL should take a step back and play domestic cricket for some time’. While some are saying that ‘KL doesn’t has a flaw in his technique but the problem is with his mentality and approach’.

Former cricketers Venkatesh Prasad and Aakash Chopra even got into a Twitter battle on whether KL deserves a place in the team or not with Venkatesh Prasad criticizing Rahul’s place in the team and Aakash Chopra defending him. But with Team India not giving much on who will open with Rohit, it has kept everyone guessing about what is going to happen.

According to media reports, red soil has been brought in from Mumbai to help fast bowlers and add bounce. The pitch’s bouncy nature will also help batters play up shots. This was not possible on Nagpur and Delhi’s spinning tracks, but Australia would like to win their first Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023 match because they are more accustomed to such surfaces.
