Aakash Chopra: Don’t need a role as a selector, coach, or IPL mentor

KL Rahul, the Indian opener, is currently receiving a lot of attention from cricket fans and analysts. Despite India’s two Test wins in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rahul’s place in the team is being heavily questioned. Rahul had poor performances with the bat in both Tests, and as a result, he has lost his vice-captaincy for the remaining two matches and may be dropped from the playing XI.

Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has also shared his thoughts on Rahul’s performances. He believes that Rahul has had enough opportunities and that the chances given to him have now reached their limit. Chopra has expressed his dissatisfaction with the support Rahul has received from coach Rahul Dravid and skipper Rohit Sharma.

TWITTER DEBATE BETWEEN AAKASH CHOPRA AND VENKATESH PRASAD

A Twitter debate ensued between former Indian pacer Venkatesh Prasad and Aakash Chopra regarding Rahul’s position in the Test team. Chopra shared screenshots of Rahul’s batting average of 38.64, which is the third-highest among all Indian batters. He also pointed out that Rohit Sharma and Washington Sundar (who has played only one Test) have the highest and second-highest averages respectively in SENA countries since 2020.

Prasad with a graphical representation of Rahul’s stats said:

“There is a view that KL Rahul has an outstanding overseas Test record. But stats speak otherwise. He has a test avg of 30 overseas in 56 innings. He has scored 6 overseas centuries but followed it up with a string of low scores that’s why averaging 30.”

Aakash refused Prasad’s claims, posted a stat, and wrote:

“Indian batters in SENA countries. Maybe, this is the reason selectors/coach/captain are backing KLR. He’s played 2 Tests at home (ongoing BGT) during this period. No, I don’t need a BCCI role as a selector/coach I don’t need any mentor, coaching role at any IPL team either.”

Prasad and Aakash Chopra have previously shared different views on Rahul’s poor form. During the second Test between India and Australia in Delhi last week, Prasad questioned Rahul’s selection. In response, Chopra asked Prasad to withhold his opinion on Rahul until the conclusion of the Delhi Test.
