Brian Lara on Washington Sundar’s progress as all-rounder in SRH

Washington Sundar

Head coach Brian Lara stated that Sundar offers value to the franchise with both bat and ball. However, they are patient with the 23-year-old and do not want to rush him by promoting him up the order.

On Friday, April 21, Chennai Super Kings defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 7 wickets in the Indian Premier League 2023. SRH suffered their second consecutive loss.

Ravindra Jadeja‘s spell blew away SRH after they were put in to bat first. They only managed to reach 134/7 in their allotted 20 overs.

In reply, CSK chased down the target in 18.4 overs. Devon Conway scored his third consecutive fifty of the season, scoring 77* off 57 balls. SRH all-rounder Washington Sundar didn’t perform well as he scored nine off six balls and gave away 16 runs in 2.4 overs.

“Washington’s value to the team is both to bowl and bat, but we have got players who can play at the top positions. With Washington, yes, we want him to be that great all-rounder with both bat and ball, but I think it’s going to take time. Pressing the button and saying that this kid has potential and let’s get him up [the batting order], that’s pretty much pressing the panic button,”

Lara said.

The left-right combination is not a bad one: Brian Lara

SRH’s batting unit failed again in the first innings, scoring only 134 runs. They tried a new opening combination of Harry Brook and Abhishek Sharma, which added 35 runs in 4.2 overs.

Head coach Brian Lara commented on the performance of the new opening pair, saying that the left-right combination showed promise. He added that if they had a fit Abhishek, then he and Mayank Agarwal would be the preferred opening pair at the beginning of the tournament.

However, Lara acknowledged that Harry Brook has given the innings some impetus when he has been able to get off. He observed that Brook has intention and the left-right combination is not a bad one. Although the experiment did not entirely work in their match against Chennai Super Kings, there was some promise, according to Lara.
