Chetan Sharma Resigns as Chief Selector amid Viral Sting Operation

Chetan

A television channel exposed shocking revelations from the Indian team’s chief selector, Chetan Sharma, in a sting operation, leading him to step down from his position.

The BCCI sources have confirmed that Sharma has sent his resignation to the board and the board has accepted it. It is expected that a formal communication will be released soon. At present, it is uncertain who will be appointed as his successor. However, reports indicate that Shiv Sundar Das, the selector from East Zone, is likely to replace him.

CHETAN SHARMA WAS RE-APPOINTED AS CHIEF SELECTOR

Chetan Sharma resigned after a TV channel secretly recorded him saying some questionable remarks. He said that Indian players take injections to get match fit. Chetan was watching a cricket game when he sent his resignation. He did not talk to any reporters.

In November 2022, BCCI sacked the whole selection panel after India’s T20 World Cup semifinal exit. Chetan was again elected as chief selector in January 2023. The current selection panel has four members: Salil Ankola, SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, and S Sharath. However, BCCI is likely to choose a new chairman soon.

A BCCI official said:

“Coach Rahul Dravid, captains Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya have completely lost faith in him. He couldn’t have possibly sat across the table along with them for selection committee meetings as he had lost all respect. He paid the price for being a big mouth.”

The BCCI official further added:

“A decision with regard to the ongoing series and selection matters will be taken soon. But cricket will not be affected, that is for sure. It remains the priority.”

Currently, India and Australia are playing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The second Test is happening in New Delhi. India won the first Test. The third Test will be played in Indore and the last match will be in Ahmedabad. This is a very important series for India. If they win three Tests, they will play in the WTC Final against Australia later this year.
