Sunil Gavaskar has named Shubman Gill as Rohit’s long-term opening partner for India. Infact, Shubman Gill caught the attention of experts early on in his career. Courtesy his impressive performance at the age of 18. Former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull was particularly impressed and ranked him ahead of Prithvi Shaw. Gill was also India’s highest scorer in the U19 World Cup.
His graph has been consistently rising since then. Gill’s Test debut in Australia was a promising start, where he showed his ability to play horizontal bat shots on Australian pitches. But he struggled to score big against England in India and lost his place in the team to KL Rahul.
However, Gill’s hard work paid off, and he became an ODI beast with big scores and even became the youngest male cricketer to score an ODI double century. His good form led to his return to the Test side, where he hit his maiden century. After warming the bench for some time, Gill got another opportunity when Rahul’s form dipped, but he couldn’t score big in the spinner-friendly Indore Test.
GILL HAS CENTURIES IN ALL FORMATS
In the fourth Test against Australia in Ahmedabad, Shubman Gill made a significant impact. He scored an impressive 128 runs in India’s first innings with 12 boundaries and a six. This innings almost guaranteed his selection in the India XI for the World Test Championship (WTC) final in June. Furthermore, Sunil Gavaskar has gone a step further and stated that Gill has solidified his spot as Rohit Sharma’s opening partner in all formats. This will come as a huge boost to Gill’s confidence, who has been working on improving his game consistently.
“He’s only 23, he’s young and with the kind of form he has shown in pretty much all the formats, scoring centuries in ODis, T20Is and Test, it appears that Rohit Sharma’s partner for the next few years is sealed,”
