India reaches World Test Championship final to face Australia

Following New Zealand’s win over Sri Lanka by 2 wickets in Christchurch, India has secured its place in the final of the World Test Championship. The Indian team will now go head-to-head with Australia in the final match which is scheduled to be played at the Oval from June 7-11.

INDIA WILL PLAY THE WTC FINAL FOR 2ND CONSECUTIVE TIME

New Zealand secured a close win over Sri Lanka in the first test on Monday, clinching victory on the last ball at Hagley Oval. Meanwhile, India’s strong performance against Australia in their ongoing Test series has ensured a minimum WTC points percentage of 57%, with no penalty points for a poor over rate in the fourth Test in Ahmedabad.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka failed to bowl out New Zealand on day five of the first Test. leading to a best possible WTC points percentage of only 56% even if they win the second Test.

Rohit Sharma’s team clinched their place in the WTC final after taking a 2-1 series lead against Australia in the first three of four Tests played at home. They are also in a good position to avoid defeat and win the Border-Gavaskar series outright.

India start their campaign in England. They won two of the first three Tests before the fifth match was postponed until 2022 due to Covid. However, they lost the fifth Test in Birmingham. They went on to win strongly at home against New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, which put them in a good position to reach the WTC final.

Their win in the BGT sets up a final against Australia at The Oval in London. The final which will begin on June 7. The winner of the final will take home the prestigious World Test Championship mace.
