Jasprit Bumrah’s injury woes continue, may miss the 2023 ODI World Cup

Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming IPL season and the World Test Championship final (if India qualifies) due to injury. Nevertheless, the Indian team management is hopeful that the pacer will recover in time for the ICC ODI World Cup.

It is uncertain whether the Mumbai Indians will seek a replacement for Bumrah in the upcoming season. The fast bowler is expected to undergo surgery, which could keep him out of action for at least five months. A second opinion on the matter will be sought from the NCA in Bengaluru.

Bumrah has been out of action since August 2022. He has missed several T20I series, including the Asia Cup. Despite making a comeback for two T20Is against Australia, the fast bowler aggravated his injury, was unable to participate in the T20 World Cup, and is yet to return to action.

The Indian cricket board initially named Bumrah in the squad for the Sri Lanka series in January, only to withdraw him later, citing the need for more time to improve his bowling resilience. However, after bowling for a few hours, Bumrah experienced discomfort and returned to the NCA. Despite the team management’s hopes that he would be fit for the last two Test matches against Australia, Bumrah continued to suffer from back pain.

In a recent interview, Harbhajan commented:

“A machine runs well when it’s used regularly but not over-worked and over-used. Jasprit Bumrah or any other talent should be treated likewise. Take Yuzvendra Chahal, no one takes his name these days, his record is so good. Or R Ashwin. If you want these players to play long, then there should be a rest period, think what’s good for them. Rest is as important as playing.”
