Michael Neser emerges as potential Australian representative in WTC final

ICC World Test Championship

Michael Neser is being considered for selection in the squad for the upcoming World Test Championship final against India. The final is going to take place from June 7. Despite having their regular bowlers available, Neser’s inclusion is a possibility due to concerns over the fitness of Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Marsh.

Hazlewood and Marsh participated in the IPL 2023 despite dealing with minor injuries. Their availability for the WTC final remains uncertain. This has created an opportunity for Neser to secure a place in the playing XI.

The final squad, consisting of 15 players, must be submitted to the ICC by Sunday, May 28, following their rules for the final. Cricket Australia recently confirmed that Hazlewood’s scans showed no significant damage. However, considering his limited Test appearances in recent months, there is a potential risk in rushing his return.

The selectors will need to carefully assess the situation before finalizing the squad for the crucial clash against India.

It will have to go perfect for him to be part of that World Test Championship final: Andrew McDonald

In addition, Andrew McDonald, the head coach of the Australian team, expressed his view on Hazlewood’s condition. Stating that everything would need to go perfectly for him to be included in the playing XI for the WTC final.

“We knew when he went to the IPL that everything would have to go perfectly. On the back of the Achilles setback in India. And at this stage everything is good, but it will have to go perfectly for him to be part of that World Test Championship final and available,”

McDonald said.

“We feel it’s almost like a home summer. We usually pick four quicks, travel around, and add players when we need. We’ve got Michael and Sean [Abbott] over there and feel they can be added in at any time depending on whether new information comes to us,”

he further added.
