On Sunday, April 2, in Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians’ Tilak Varma batted brilliantly during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Varma scored an unbeaten 84 off just 46 balls, which impressed former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif.
Kaif praised Varma for having an all-around game in their IPL 2023 opening match. During his knock, Varma played a helicopter shot that reminded Kaif of former India skipper, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Kaif did not hesitate to call it a mirrored replication of the legendary world champion.
However, despite Varma’s fantastic performance, Faf du Plessis and his team managed to chase down MI’s target of 171 runs with ease. They won the game with eight wickets in hand and 22 balls to spare.
“Leg side is his strong suit. He uses his bottom hand but he makes room as well, hits sixes straight down the ground and plays the scoop shot. So it is not that he can only score on the leg side. The helicopter shot – if you watch it through a mirror, you will feel it is MS Dhoni because you will see him as a right-hander there,”
said Kaif.

During the Mumbai Indians’ poor performance in the previous IPL season, Mohammad Kaif noticed the outstanding performance of 20-year-old batter, Tilak Varma. Kaif observed that Varma’s excellent form has carried over to the current IPL 2023 season.
In the 2022 edition, Varma played 14 matches and scored 397 runs with an impressive strike rate of 131.02. It was his first season in the IPL, and he made a significant impact.
Kaif believes that Varma’s talent and skills have made him an important asset for Mumbai Indians, and his performance will be crucial for their success in the ongoing IPL season.
