Sehwag plays down Dhoni’s milestone achievement in IPL history

During the IPL match between Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants on April 3, the CSK captain MS Dhoni hit two sixes off Mark Wood to become the seventh player in IPL history to score 5000 runs. Although he got dismissed on the very next delivery, the crowd at the Chepauk stadium thoroughly enjoyed his shots. Virender Sehwag, his former teammate, has commented that Dhoni wouldn’t care much about this new milestone and that it would have little significance to him. According to Sehwag, such records and achievements are only important after retirement, for remembrance.

“If you ask MS Dhoni, he will ask what difference it makes whether he has scored 5000, 3000 or 7000 runs; the important thing is to win the trophy, which he has done. I don’t think he goes after or thinks about milestones. I was also like that. Who knows how many runs have been scored, but it is true that these numbers are remembered later. When you retire, it is remembered that this player scored so many runs in the IPL,”

Sehwag said.

No player might be able to score so many runs while playing at that number: Virender Sehwag

Praising Dhoni’s achievement, Sehwag expressed his admiration for the captain’s ability to score so many runs coming in lower down the order. He also stated that he doesn’t think any other player in the IPL will be able to match this record in the near future. Additionally, Sehwag referred to Dhoni as a big player.

“The expectation is that the top-order batters will score the most runs. MS Dhoni comes in the middle order or lower-middle order, and he has scored 5000 runs. No player might be able to score so many runs while playing at that number. He is consistent, scores runs and wins matches for his team. He is a very big player.”

Sehwag concluded.
