Sourav Ganguly tips Shubman Gill as ‘permanent player’ for India

Shubman Gill

With KL Rahul’s poor form raising questions about India’s opening pair in the future, many wondered who would partner Rohit Sharma. However, Shubman Gill seems to have answered that question for now. He replaced Rahul in the third Test against Australia and showed potential with his positive intent and solid strokes. Gill was always seen as a player for the future and has previously had a run as a Test opener. While he did well on debut, he struggled to get big scores in matches after the Australia tour. Sourav Ganguly said that he thinks Shubman is now a permanent player for India.

Injuries allowed Rahul to reclaim his spot in the team, but Gill has since made a superb comeback. He scored his maiden Test century in December and followed it up with another solid knock in the fourth Test against Australia.

GILL SHOULD OPEN IN WTC FINAL WITH ROHIT: SOURAV

It’s worth noting that Gill hasn’t been inconsistent across all formats. He has performed remarkably well in limited-overs cricket, scoring centuries in both ODIs and T20Is. Looking at Gill’s future, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed confidence in the 23-year-old and believes he is a permanent fixture in the Indian side. When it comes to selecting the India XI for the WTC final against Australia on June 7 at The Oval, England, Ganguly feels Gill will be one of the first players chosen by Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid.

“Firstly, congratulations to India for beating Australia. India have won in Australia, and they have won in England so there is no reason why they can’t win it again (In the WTC final). Bat well, score 350-400, and you’ll be in a position to win. Yeah (I see Shubman Gill retaining his place in the side). He has been brilliant in the last six-seven months. What else does he need to do? He’s a permanent player now,”
