Steve Smith reflects on “daunting” experience of captaining MSD in IPL

Chennai Super Kings

Steve Smith, who will be a commentator for IPL 2023, shared his thoughts on captaining the Rising Pune Supergiant during the 2017 season. The team included the Indian cricket icon MS Dhoni. Smith found it intimidating when he was appointed as the captain of a squad that had Dhoni as a member. He stated that it was a remarkable experience to lead such a legendary player.

Moving on to the upcoming season, IPL 2023 is set to commence on March 31st, with the opening match between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

Behind the stumps, he’s got a great view of the game: Steve Smith

Smith said:

“Of course, you know he’s been able to achieve so much over such a long period of time, he’s going to go down as one of the best leaders to play the game for sure. So, you know, when I got the call to say that they wanted me to captain, it was a little bit daunting. But that season, MSD was just wonderful. You know, he helped in any way that he could and he’s a terrific guy. It was a great experience being able to captain him, but also very daunting as well.

Reflecting on his time playing alongside MS Dhoni in the IPL, Steve Smith shared that he had a positive experience working with the former India captain. According to Smith, Dhoni was exceptional behind the stumps. MSD had a deep understanding of the angles on his home ground. Smith added that Dhoni’s contributions were instrumental in the team’s success during the 2017 season.

“Well, it was a while ago now, but yeah, look out on the field. He was someone that I was bouncing ideas off. You know, being behind the stumps, he’s got a great, great view of the game. He understands the angles really well. And obviously playing in India also, you know, it’s his home and he understands those conditions as well as anyone would,”

Smith further added.
