Following Ambati Rayudu’s retirement from the IPL, his former CSK teammate Robin Uthappa paid a heartfelt tribute. Rayudu’s decision to retire came before the IPL final between CSK and GT in the 16th edition. However, due to rain, his final appearance was postponed to May 29 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Uthappa expressed deep admiration for Rayudu, considering him one of India’s most underrated players. Uthappa felt immense disbelief that Rayudu had not received the recognition he deserved. Notably, Rayudu did not have the opportunity to play Test cricket for India, which Uthappa considered a missed opportunity for the experienced campaigner.
“He has been there, done that, and seen it all. He is one of the most underrated cricketers India has ever produced. I feel he should have played Test Cricket, I can’t believe he did not play the game,”
Uthappa said.
“He is an astute student of the game, someone who knows the game inside out. Absolute team man will do anything for the team. Every team would have loved to have him. I have loved him from the age of my junior days. He dominated cricket through junior cricket. His retirement is kind of sombre and heartfelt for me,”
Robin further added.
Rayudu opened in 2018, scored 600 runs and CSK won the title: Uthappa
Robin Uthappa reminisced about Ambati Rayudu’s remarkable comeback in the IPL 2018 season, where he opened the batting for CSK and amassed 602 runs. Initially mocked by many, Rayudu’s outstanding performance helped CSK win the title, earning him well-deserved praise and securing his return to the Indian squad.
Uthappa acknowledged Rayudu’s versatility in adapting to different roles assigned to him throughout his IPL career, emphasizing his willingness to take on any challenge without complaint. Uthappa also credited the support staff for their unwavering support towards Rayudu. Despite facing criticism and trolling, Rayudu remained resilient and accepted it gracefully. Furthermore, Robin believes that Rayudu deserves all the accolades for his contributions and the way he handled challenges throughout his career.
