India won the first Test in Nagpur of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by an inning and 132 runs, with Ravichandran Ashwin leading the Australian collapse. Ashwin took five wickets, his 31st five-wicket haul, with figures of 5-37. India now leads the series 1-0, with the second Test in Delhi set for February 17th. After the match, Ashwin tweeted in response to a fan who called him “Anna Bhaiya” at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium.

Someone at the stadium called me Anna Bhaiya today. Anna and Bhaiya are one and the same (big brother). I am extremely grateful for the love I receive but this one small correction would help,”

tweeted R Ashwin.

Ashwin took his 5 for 37, his 31st 5-wicket haul

On Day 3, India resumed play leading Australia by 144 runs. Axar Patel added 52 runs with Mohammed Shami and 20 runs with Mohammed Siraj. It extended India’s lead to 223 after Ravindra Jadeja was dismissed for 70. However, in their second innings, Australia’s top-order crumbled under the spin of Ashwin and Jadeja. The Australian team only scored 91 runs, with Ashwin taking 5 wickets and Jadeja taking 2 wickets. Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, praised Ash as a “world-class bowler” who is especially strong at home and labeled him as one of India’s all-time great bowlers.

Ashwin’s outstanding five-wicket haul led India to a dominant victory over Australia in the first Test. India bowled Australia out for 91 in the second innings, winning by innings and 131 runs in less than three days of play. With this performance, Ashwin achieved a major milestone as he became only the second Indian player ever to take 450 Test wickets. Additionally, he became the second fastest player in Test cricket to reach this feat.
